The Election Commission has decided to hold a by-election in Chitwan Region No. 2 on May 10th. Earlier, Ravi Lamichhane was elected as the chairman of Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RASWPA) from Chitwan-2 in the election held on 4th November. However, Lamichhane’s position was removed after the Supreme Court ruled that he renounced Nepali citizenship and took American citizenship and did not complete the process of re-acquiring Nepali citizenship after relinquishing American citizenship.
Provisions related to by-elections are in Section 68 of the House of Representatives Election Act. Where it is said, ‘…if the position of a member elected under the first-come, first-served election system remains vacant for more than six months, the position of such vacant member shall be filled by by-election on the date specified by the Commission.’ It has been decided to hold by-elections on 10th of Baisakh.
